Susan Austin

I am a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist trained to work with adults. I work solely at the Queen Anne Street Practice, having worked for many years as a Consultant Adult Psychotherapist based at St Thomas’ Hospital, within the South London and Maudsley NHS Mental Health Trust.

I see a wide range of adults of all ages, including younger adults, and work flexibly, according to individual need. For this reason, the scale of the work varies widely, from a few consultations, through once weekly work, to longer term, intensive psychotherapy.

While the focus is always on looking with an open mind at all of an individual and their history, some key areas of clinical expertise are as follows: developmental difficulties; anxiety and depression; problems with family, intimate or wider relationships; loss, trauma and complex post traumatic stress disorder; difficulties which are bound up with the body, such as eating disorders and physical conditions. Another long-standing interest is in work-related difficulties and in the development of a professional identity.

I also have substantial clinical experience with individuals who have experienced episodes of major psychiatric illness, sometimes working alongside colleagues when a team approach is needed.

Alongside individual psychotherapy, I regularly offer parent consultations, sometimes in liaison with child psychotherapist and psychiatrist colleagues who are working with family members.

I find it works well to have two initial meetings at the outset, to allow time to pay careful attention to what exactly what would be most helpful and to then plan accordingly.

Most people prefer to attend in person when possible, but I am happy to work online when that is more practical.

I am a member of the British Psychotherapy Foundation and am registered (reg. no. 20044) with the British Psychoanalytic Council.
