Dr Andrew Williams

I am a Psychoanalyst with over 20 years of experience of working in mental health. I was a Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical and Forensic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust between 2010 and 2021, a clinical and managerial role that included the provision of individual and group psychotherapy for a diverse patient population presenting with a wide range of difficulties. During this period I was mostly based at the Portman Clinic, a National specialist service that specialises in the provision of talking therapies for patients who suffer with difficulties with aggression and compulsive sexual behaviours. Alongside this position, I was Head of the Tavistock Clinic’s Adult Psychotherapy Service between 2019 and 2021, and also held the role of Head of Adult Psychiatry and Clinical Governance for Adult Services. I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych) in 2022, a status awarded in recognition of outstanding contribution to the field of Psychiatry. I continue as a Visiting Lecturer in Forensic Psychotherapy at the Portman Clinic.

I completed my core psychiatric training at the Maudsley and Bethlem Royal Hospitals between 2001 and 2004, working in specialties including adult, child and adolescent psychiatry and addictions. I then completed a five-year specialised higher dual training in Forensic Psychiatry and Medical Psychotherapy, working in various NHS psychotherapy departments and forensic secure settings, including Broadmoor Hospital. Alongside my career in the NHS, I qualified as a Psychoanalyst at the Institute of Psychoanalysis in 2017 and was awarded Fellowship of the British Psychoanalytical Society in 2023.

I am passionate about the use of a psychoanalytic approach to help individuals who are suffering from difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and compulsive sexual behaviours. I also offer psychodynamic psychotherapy for couples who are struggling with challenges such as difficulties with intimacy, conflict, and infidelity. In addition, I provide supervision for clinicians working with highly complex patients, including those who present risks to themselves or others.

If you would like a preliminary discussion regarding the possibility of working together, please contact me by email and I will be happy to speak with you. We can then meet for an initial consultation in order to develop a deeper understanding of your difficulties and agree upon a treatment plan.

I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a Member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).
