Bettina Hohnen

I’m a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with a PhD and over 25 years of experience working with families in both the NHS and private practice. Parenting is challenging enough, but when a child has a diagnosis (like ADHD) or mental health difficulties, it can feel overwhelming.  My unique background in mental health and neurodiversity – both clinically and academically – means I understand the science and how to apply it in real-life situations. My goal is to help parents untangle the complexities, nurturing and supporting their child while also teaching them to push through challenges and work toward meaningful goals. In therapy, we’ll address whatever is standing in the way – whether it’s the dynamic between parents, adapting strategies for neurodiversity, or finding the balance between kindness and strength in the face of challenging behaviour. I work with parents for weeks, months or sometimes for years. We’ll work out what you and your family need.

If one-to-one therapy isn’t for you, there are many other ways to connect with my work and benefit from my expertise:

Assessments: I work as part of the London Neurodiverstiy Clinic carrying out assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Academic work: I hold an academic position at UCL where I teach in the field of child and adolescent mental health, neurodiversity and education to Masters and Doctoral students.

Books: I have authored two books: The Incredible Teenage Brain: Everything You Need to Know to Unlock a Teen’s Potential (2019) and How to Have Incredible Conversations with Your Child (2021).

Podcast: I have a podcast (Just One Thing For Parents) where I speak to experts and share bitesized, practical parenting tips.

Writing: I write on substack and offer regular vlogs for the charity Nip In The Bud

Courses & Workshops: I have written and regularly run Connected Teens, a group course for parents of teenagers, and run workshops like Embracing Neurodiversity in the Teen Years, focusing on parenting neurodiverse teens.

I am registered with HCPC as a Clinical Psychologist.
